Wind, Water & Wisdom Eagle Festival 2008 Speaker Schedule and Topic Descriptions *All presentations will be held at Concrete High School Saturday, January 26, 2008 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Stan Walsh, Environmental Services Manager, Skagit River System Cooperative Presentation Room: Concrete High School Band Room Topic: “Salmon Life Histories in the Skagit River Watershed” This overview of the Skagit watershed covers the life histories of two of the very important species of salmon to the watershed. Stan will not only discuss the importance of salmon to the watershed but also contrast chum salmon and coho and their significance to the health of the ecosystem. 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Bob Mierendorf, Archeologist, North Cascades National Park Presentation Room: Concrete High School Library Topic: “The First People, Environments and spirits of the Upper Skagit River” Bob has been a professional archeologist working in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. Over the last 18 years, in his job as North Cascades National Park archeologist, he has recorded hundreds of archeological sites all across the rugged Cascade Range, and demonstrated more than 9,000 years of human involvement in the Upper Skagit River basin. Bob also works with a broad range of partners who share interest in the natural history of the Skagit River watershed, including the Skagit River tribes and Canadian First Nations, local and state agencies, schools and universities, among others. 11:10 a.m. to12:10 p.m. Sardis Raptor Center Presentation Room assignment: Concrete High School Multi-purpose Room Topic: “Hunters of the Sky” This exciting program offered by Sardis Raptor Center, the largest bird of prey center in the Pacific Northwest, includes some of the most magnificent birds of prey such as Bald and Golden Eagles, a variety of hawks, the largest owl species in the world and a Peregrine Falcon, capable of 200 mile per hour dives! This show is filled with so much excitement, emotion and fun that people don’t realize they are learning at the same time. Audience participation coupled with these truly incredible creatures produces an impact that will make this a truly memorable event. 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Kay Harradine, Degrees in Forestry and Education, University of Washington, Educator for NW Basket Weavers Guild Presentation Room Assignment: Concrete High School Band Room Topic: “Beauty and Purpose: A Tour of West Coast Basketry” Kay Harradine has been a serious student of basketry for over twenty years, specializing in plant fibers harvested responsibly from the Pacific Northwest. Baskets served many everyday functions for the People of the North American West Coast. Knowledge of local plants, how they were gathered and how the fibers were processed was handed down by oral tradition. Gain an appreciation for these traditional art forms through slides and examination of baskets from the speaker’s collection 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Jon Riedel, Geologist, North Cascades National Park Presentation Room Assignment: Concrete High School Library Topic: “The History of Climate Change in Skagit Valley” Jon is presently employed as a geologist , serving primarily at North Cascades National Park, but also at other national parks in the northwest. His current research interests include studying the history of glaciation in the Upper Skagit spanning the last 30,000 years. Audience participation coupled with these truly incredible creatures produces an impact that will make this a truly memorable event. 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Scott Schuyler, Policy Director for the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe Presentation Room Assignment: Concrete High School Library Topic: "The History of the Upper Skagit Tribe and their relationship with Salmon" Scott Schuyler, a member of the Upper Skagit Tribe, will teach about the history of the tribe in the Skagit River Watershed. He will cover their interdependence on the great salmon runs of the river. He will teach about the importance of salmon culturally and historically as well as their significance to the health of the Skagit River and it's tributaries. 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Kelsey Barnett, Chris Palton, Heather Nick, Concrete High School Students Presentation Room Assignment: Concrete High School Band Roo Topic: Eagle Festival Poster Contest Winners Kelsey, Chris and Heather, Concrete High School students worked with Don Smith, a well known Skagit Valley artist, as well as with Janet Schwietzer, their Concrete High School art teacher to develop the 2008 Upper Skagit Bald Eagle poster entitled “Wind, Water & Wisdom”. They participated in an “art contest” and worked with Don on some of the finer points of graphic design.
