Take a look at This Year's Schedule!Wind, Water & Wisdom Eagle Festival 2008 Speaker Schedule and Topic Descriptions *All presentations will be held at Concrete High School 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Katie Roloson, North Cascades Institute, Masters in Environmental Education student Presentation Room: Concrete High School Band Room Topic: “Glaciers to the Sound: A Journey along the Skagit” This overview of the Skagit watershed covers the natural and cultural history of the area. It includes a glimpse at the geologic forces, the importance of salmon, logging, agriculture and the various hydroelectric projects. Katie also will discuss native plants and animals in her presentation. She will “paint a picture” of the Skagit watershed, this place we call home! 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Doug Bruland, Puget Sound Energy Fisheries Biologist Presentation Room: Concrete High School Library Topic: “A Look to the Future: The New Salmon Facilities at the Baker River Project” Doug Bruland, one of Puget Sound Energy’s (PSE) fisheries biologists, will discuss the plans for a new hatchery, a new “gulper”, a new adult salmon trap, and a whole series of new improvements to the fisheries programs at PSE’s Baker River Hydroelectric project. He will explain the progressive plans that are now in place to support the Baker River Sockeye and other salmon species that call the Baker River watershed home! 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Sardis Raptor Center Presentation Room assignment: Concrete High School Multi-purpose Room Topic: “Hunters of the Sky” This exciting program offered by Sardis Raptor Center, the largest bird of prey center in the Pacific Northwest, includes some of the most magnificent birds of prey such as Bald and Golden Eagles, a variety of hawks, the largest owl species in the world and a Peregrine Falcon, capable of 200 mile per hour dives! This show is filled with so much excitement, emotion and fun that people don’t realize they are learning at the same time. Audience participation coupled with these truly incredible creatures produces an impact that will make this a truly memorable event. 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nan Laney, Field/Education Coordinator for the Grizzly Bear Outreach Project Presentation Room Assignment: Concrete High School Library Topic: “The Bear Necessities: Grizzlies and the North Cascades Ecosystem” Nan will share an excellent slide show regarding her work with the Grizzly Bear Outreach Project (GBOP). GBOP is dedicated to promoting an accurate understanding of grizzly bears and their recovery in the North Cascades ecosystem through community education and involvement. You will learn about grizzly bears-- their history in this region, their status, ecology and behavior, bear identification, how humans can safely co-exist with bears, and the recovery process in Washington’s North Cascades. 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Kay Harradine, Degrees in Forestry and Education, University of Washington, Educator for NW Basket Weavers Guild Presentation Room Assignment: Concrete High School Band Room Topic: “Beauty and Purpose: A Tour of West Coast Basketry” Kay Harradine has been a serious student of basketry for over twenty years, specializing in plant fibers harvested responsibly from the Pacific Northwest. Baskets served many everyday functions for the People of the North American West Coast. Knowledge of local plants, how they were gathered and how the fibers were processed was handed down by oral tradition.
